Electronics manufacturing in African and Caribbean nations has been developing, with several countries making notable strides in this sector.

Africa:

  • Ethiopia and Sudan: Samsung has invested in manufacturing and assembly plants in these countries, producing electronic goods for local and regional markets.
  • Kenya: The country has potential to become a major producer of consumer electronics and appliances, specifically televisions and refrigerators, to serve both domestic and surrounding markets.
  • Egypt: SICO Technology, an Egyptian company, manufactures mobile phones and tablets, including the Nile X smartphone, contributing to the local electronics industry.
  • South Africa: The nation has a diverse electronics sector, producing over R90 billion worth of electrotechnical equipment annually, encompassing industrial and consumer electronics.

Caribbean:

  • Dominican Republic: The country has established itself as a key hub for tech manufacturing in the Caribbean, with 87% of its electrical and electronic device exports directed towards the United States.
  • Jamaica: The electronics assembly and fabrication sector is emerging, with over 1,000 companies contributing to this market segment.
  • Puerto Rico: Home to several electronics manufacturing companies, including Circo Caribe Corp. and Printed Circuits of Puerto Rico, contributing to the region’s electronics production.

While these developments indicate progress, the electronics manufacturing industry in both regions is still evolving, with ongoing efforts to enhance production capabilities and integrate into global supply chains.
