Dr. Thakgalo Thibela is a South African medical doctor who gained national recognition in 2021 as the country’s youngest female medical doctor at the age of 21. Her journey from a rural village to the medical field is a testament to her determination and academic excellence.

Early Life and Education

Born and raised in Violet Bank, a village in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga Province, Dr. Thibela displayed exceptional academic abilities from a young age. She attended Farel Primary School, where she skipped Grade 7, and later Lehlasedi High School, bypassing Grade 9. Her accelerated academic path led her to complete matric with seven distinctions at the age of 15.

At 16, she received a bursary from the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), where she earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree in December 2020.

Medical Career

Dr. Thibela began her medical career during the COVID-19 pandemic, completing her internship at Helen Joseph Hospital and her community service at Mapulaneng Hospital. She has worked across various departments, including paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, and anaesthesiology.

Despite her qualifications and experience, she has faced challenges in securing permanent employment and is among the over 800 unemployed doctors in South Africa. She has expressed her willingness to serve anywhere in the country and is also open to opportunities abroad.

Aspirations and Recognition

Dr. Thibela aspires to specialize in neurosurgery and is committed to improving healthcare accessibility in South Africa. She believes that quality care should not be exclusive to private institutions. Her dedication to the medical field has been recognized by her inclusion in the Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans list in 2022.
