Demi Johnson, a ninth-grade student from Gulfport, Mississippi, has gained national recognition for her innovative efforts in oyster reef conservation. Her journey began as a Girl Scout project, where she initiated an oyster gardening endeavor at Schooner Pier in Biloxi. This initiative led to the cultivation of over 1,000 oysters, which are expected to spawn millions more in the coming years.

Demi’s dedication to environmental restoration earned her a spot among the top finalists in the National Geographic Society’s Slingshot Challenge. Her project, “Off Bottom Oysters,” highlighted her innovative approach to oyster gardening and restoration.

Beyond her oyster gardening project, Demi has been actively involved in educational outreach, aiming to inspire other students in Mississippi to engage in marine conservation. Her future aspirations include pursuing a career in environmental law, where she hopes to represent environmental groups and advocate for sustainable practices.

Demi Johnson’s work serves as an inspiring example of how young individuals can make significant contributions to environmental conservation and community engagement.
