As of today, no Afro-Caribbean nations are governed by a reigning queen. However, some Caribbean nations still recognize the British monarch as their head of state under a constitutional monarchy system.

Caribbean Nations Recognizing the British Monarch (King Charles III) as Head of State

These nations are former British colonies and are part of the Commonwealth realm, meaning they still recognize the King of the United Kingdom (Charles III) as their monarch:

  1. Antigua and Barbuda
  2. The Bahamas
  3. Barbados (until 2021, now a republic)
  4. Belize
  5. Grenada
  6. Jamaica
  7. Saint Kitts and Nevis
  8. Saint Lucia
  9. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Important Notes:

  • Barbados became a republic in 2021, removing the British monarch as head of state.
  • There are ongoing discussions in Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Antigua and Barbuda about becoming republics.
  • The British monarch is a ceremonial head of state, meaning these countries are self-governing, but they still acknowledge the King symbolically.
