Angola is Home To A Diverse Range Of Wildlife, Some of Which Are Rare Or Endemic

Angola is home to a diverse range of wildlife, thanks to its vast landscapes, including savannas, forests, rivers, and deserts. The country’s national parks and reserves help protect many of its native species, some of which are rare or endemic.


Major Wildlife Species in Angola

Large Mammals

  • African Elephant – Found in places like Luiana Partial Reserve and Luengue-Luiana National Park.
  • African Lion – Once widespread, now recovering in some parks like Iona and Bicuar.
  • Leopard – Elusive and scattered across forested and savanna regions.
  • Cheetah – Seen in desert regions, particularly in the Namibe area.
  • Giraffe – Especially in southern parks like Iona and Luengue-Luiana.
  • Zebra – Plains zebras are common in some savannas.

Antelope & Hoofed Animals

  • Giant Sable Antelope – Angola’s national animal and critically endangered. Found only in the Cangandala National Park and Luando Reserve.
  • Roan Antelope
  • Kudu
  • Bushbuck
  • Waterbuck

Reptiles & Amphibians

  • Nile Crocodile – In large rivers like the Kwanza and Cunene.
  • Monitor Lizards, snakes (like the African rock python), and various frogs inhabit Angola’s wetlands and forests.

Birds

Angola is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 900 species, including:

  • African Fish Eagle
  • Grey Crowned Crane
  • Pel’s Fishing Owl
  • Bar-tailed Trogon
  • Angola Cave Chat – Endemic to Angola
  • Swierstra’s Francolin – Rare and found in highland forests

Primates

  • Chimpanzees – Found mainly in the Maiombe forest region in the north.
  • Baboons and Vervet Monkeys – Common across savanna and woodland areas.
  • Angolan Colobus Monkey – A black-and-white monkey found in forests and riversides.

Insects & Others

  • Numerous species of butterflies, beetles, and moths thrive in the rainforests and wetlands.
  • Angola is rich in biodiversity and is still being studied for new or rediscovered species.

  • Iona National Park – Desert wildlife and cheetahs
  • Cangandala National Park – Giant sable antelope
  • Luengue-Luiana National Park – Elephants, big cats, and large mammals
  • Bicuar National Park – Savannah animals and birds
