Here are a couple of images capturing the innovative electric motorcycle project by Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) students—showing the team and their converted vehicle. Now, let’s dive into the details:
AAUA Students Convert Petrol Bicycle to Electric Motorcycle
Project Overview
- Who: Six final-year students from AAUA’s Department of Physics and Electronics — Abdulazeez Uthman Alabi, Adejoro Glory Isaac, Odetokun Opeyemi Oluwatosin, Adejunmobi David Ademola, Aladesanmi Emmanuel, and Olaniyi Eniola .
- Supervisor: The project was guided by their lecturer, Dr. Mrs. T. Y. Ojebisi
What They Did
The students converted a traditional internal combustion (petrol) motorcycle—specifically a Bajaj “Okada”—into a fully electric motorcycle by retrofitting it with components like an electric motor, motor controller, and lithium-ion battery cells
Technical Highlights
- The vehicle now travels 80–100 km on a single charge, runs quietly, and produces no tailpipe emissions
- The students acquired a used Bajaj bike and sourced essential components through personal funding—supported at lower cost by ThinkBikes Limited in Ibadan
- They tackled numerous technical and fabrication challenges, combining hands-on SIWES experience and faculty mentorship to bring the project to completion
Recognition & Impact
- The project was widely covered in university communications and Nigerian media, praising the students’ creativity and alignment with sustainability, innovation, and cost-efficiency
- AAUA’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, highlighted the project during the university’s convocation activities as a prime example of applied research with real-world impact
- Alumni and university stakeholders are calling for increased government and private-sector support to sustain such innovations and scale student-led research in Nigerian universities
