The currency used in Saint Martin depends on which side of the island you’re on, since the island is divided between France and the Netherlands:

French Side – Saint-Martin

  • Official Currency: Euro (EUR, €)
  • 1 Euro = 100 cents
  • Common coins: €1, €2, 50c, 20c, 10c
  • Common notes: €5, €10, €20, €50, €100

Dutch Side – Sint Maarten

  • Official Currency: Netherlands Antillean Guilder (ANG or ƒ)
  • Fixed exchange rate: 1 USD = 1.79 ANG
  • U.S. dollars (USD) are also widely accepted and often used in practice.

Payments & Currency Use in Practice:

  • U.S. dollars are accepted almost everywhere on both sides (especially in tourist areas).
  • Credit/debit cards are commonly accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops.
  • ATMs are available on both sides; they dispense Euros on the French side and Guilders or USD on the Dutch side.
