Currency in Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe uses the euro (€) as its official currency.

Details:

  • Currency Name: Euro
  • Currency Code: EUR
  • Symbol: €
  • Subunits:
    • 1 euro = 100 cents

Why the Euro?

Guadeloupe is an overseas department and region of France, fully integrated into the European Union. As such:

  • It uses the euro, just like mainland France.
  • Monetary policy is governed by the European Central Bank (ECB).
  • French banks operate in Guadeloupe under the same regulations as in Europe.

Banking and Currency Use

  • ATMs and banks are widespread in cities and towns.
  • Credit/debit cards are widely accepted (Visa, Mastercard).
  • Cash is still commonly used in markets and rural areas.
  • Currency exchange is available at the airport, banks, and exchange offices.

Comparison with Other Caribbean Territories

  • Unlike neighboring islands (e.g., Dominica or Saint Lucia) that use the East Caribbean Dollar (XCD), Guadeloupe’s use of the euro ties it more closely to Europe economically.
