Historic Figures

Irksie Leila “Leila” Yates (1899–1996)

  • Cayman’s first trained nurse-midwife, beginning her work in 1919 and delivering over 1,000 babies during her career
  • Head government nurse during the 1931 malaria epidemic; continued serving through homespun healthcare until Cayman Hospital opened in 1952
