1. Indigenous Rulers

Joseph Chatoyer (also called Satuye) – National Hero

  • Title: Paramount Chief (often referred to as “King” of the Black Caribs)
  • Era: Late 1700s (died in 1795)
  • Role:
    • Led the Black Caribs (Garifuna) in armed resistance against British colonization
    • Fought in the First Carib War (1772–1773) and Second Carib War (1795–1797)
    • Killed in battle in 1795 on Dorsetshire Hill
    • Declared SVG’s first National Hero on March 14 (celebrated as National Heroes Day)

2. British Colonial Rulers (1763–1979)

Saint Vincent was ruled by Britain as a colony from the Treaty of Paris (1763) until independence in 1979. The island was governed by:
