Factories and Manufacturing in Aruba – Overview

Aruba’s economy is primarily based on tourism, but the island also has a modest industrial and manufacturing sector, mostly focused on oil refining, beverage production, construction materials, and local consumer goods.

1. Oil Refinery (Now Inactive) – Once Aruba’s Biggest Factory

Valero Aruba Refinery (San Nicolas)

  • Located in San Nicolas, it was once one of the largest employers on the island.
  • Originally built in the 1920s by ExxonMobil, later operated by Valero Energy Corporation.
  • It refined heavy crude oil and played a major role in the economy.
  • Closed in 2012, though there were efforts to reopen or convert it into an energy hub.

As of 2024, the refinery remains inactive, though the facilities still exist.

2. Beverage and Food Factories

Balashi Brewery

  • Produces Balashi Beer, Aruba’s most popular local beer.
  • Also bottles soft drinks and purified water.
  • Located near Oranjestad and offers factory tours.

Aruba Aloe Factory

  • Produces skincare and wellness products using locally grown aloe vera.
  • Major export product and tourist attraction.
  • Operates a museum and guided tours.

3. Construction and Materials Manufacturing

Cement, Blocks & Tiles

  • Aruba has small-scale factories that produce:
    • Concrete blocks
    • Roofing tiles
    • Paving stones
  • These support the local construction industry.

4. Consumer Goods & Local Products

  • Small factories produce:
    • Soaps
    • Packaged snacks
    • Textiles and clothing (limited)
  • Craft and souvenir workshops also exist, often blending art with small-scale production.

5. Energy & Recycling Facilities

  • Aruba has invested in sustainable energy and waste management
    • Desalination plant: Provides clean drinking water
    • Waste recycling facility in Parkietenbos

6. Free Zone Aruba

  • A special area in Barcadera Port that offers tax incentives to businesses
  • Hosts light manufacturing, assembly, and export-oriented industries
  • Supports import/export businesses and logistics
