Transportation in Fiji – Overview

Fiji has a well-developed land, sea, and air transport system that connects its main islands (Viti Levu and Vanua Levu) with outer islands and major towns. While public transport is widely available and affordable, infrastructure in remote areas can be basic.

1. Land Transportation

Public Buses

  • Most common and affordable way to travel between towns and villages.
  • Operates in both urban and rural areas.
  • Prepaid eTransport cards are used (no cash payment on some routes).
  • Major bus companies: Fiji Bus Operators Association members, such as Shore Buses, Sunbeam Transport.

Taxis

  • Readily available in cities and towns like Suva, Nadi, and Lautoka.
  • Metered fares, but some drivers negotiate prices for long distances.
  • Licensed taxis have yellow plates.

Mini Buses & Carriers

  • Serve shorter routes or routes where large buses don’t reach.
  • Faster than buses but often overcrowded.
  • Common in rural areas and for school or market transport.

Private Vehicles

  • Many locals own cars, SUVs, or utility vehicles.
  • Roads in cities are mostly sealed, but rural roads can be unpaved or potholed.
  • Driving is on the left-hand side of the road.

2. Sea Transportation

Fiji is made up of 330+ islands, so maritime transport is vital.

Inter-Island Ferries & Boats

  • Connect major islands like Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu, and the Yasawas.
  • Popular operators include:
    • Goundar Shipping
    • Patterson Brothers Shipping
    • South Sea Cruises
    • Interlink Shipping
  • Transport both passengers and vehicles.

Smaller Boats & Outboard Motor Canoes

  • Used in remote and maritime villages.
  • Often run by local villagers or tourism operators.

3. Air Transportation

Domestic Flights

  • Connect main islands and remote areas.
  • Major airports:
    • Nadi International Airport (main gateway)
    • Nausori Airport (near Suva)
    • Labasa, Savusavu, Taveuni (smaller airports)
  • Airlines:
    • Fiji Link (domestic arm of Fiji Airways)
    • Northern Air
    • Island Hoppers (charter & scenic flights)

International Flights

  • Nadi International Airport connects Fiji to:
    • Australia, New Zealand, USA, China, Japan, Singapore, etc.

4. Challenges in Transportation

  • Some rural roads and outer islands lack regular services.
  • Weather-related delays (e.g., cyclones affect sea and air travel).
  • Overcrowding and maintenance issues in some public transport modes.

5. Improvements & Investments

  • Government and international partners (e.g., China, ADB) are upgrading:
    • Road infrastructure
    • Port facilities
    • Public buses
    • Airport runways
