Here are some of the most famous female sports athletes from Guyana, who have represented the country in boxing, athletics, swimming, and squash on international stages:

1. Gwendolyn O’Neil – Boxing

  • First Guyanese woman to win a world boxing title.
  • Won the WIBA Light Heavyweight title in 2004.
  • Nicknamed “Stealth Bomber”.
  • A trailblazer for women’s boxing in Guyana and the Caribbean.

2. Aliyah Abrams – Athletics (400m sprinter)

  • Represented Guyana at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  • US-based athlete; trains in South Carolina.
  • Holds Guyana’s national record in the 400m.
  • Competed at World Championships and Pan Am Games.

3. Andrea Foster – Middle-Distance Runner

  • Specializes in the 800m and 1500m.
  • Represented Guyana at CARIFTA Games, Commonwealth Games, and Pan Am Juniors.
  • Known for her endurance and consistency.

4. Aleka Persaud – Swimming

  • Youngest athlete from Guyana at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (age 15).

  • Older sister of Aliyah Abrams.

7. Chelsea Edghill – Table Tennis

  • First Guyanese table tennis player to qualify for the Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020).
