South Sudan has produced several notable doctors who have made significant contributions both nationally and internationally, often under very challenging circumstances. Here are some of the most respected and recognized medical professionals from South Sudan:


1. Dr. Evan Atar Adaha

Specialty: Surgeon
Known For: Running a hospital in Bunj, Maban County, Upper Nile State.

  • He gained global recognition for providing surgical care in conflict zones with very limited resources.
  • Awarded the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award in 2018 for his humanitarian work.
  • He performs surgeries and treats both South Sudanese and Sudanese refugees in a region with no consistent electricity or advanced equipment.

2. Dr. Lul Riek

Specialty: Public Health
Known For: Serving as the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Health in South Sudan.

  • Played a major role in public health policy, especially during disease outbreaks like cholera and COVID-19.
  • Has also contributed to health sector reforms and international health collaborations.

3. Dr. Olivia Lomoro

Specialty: Obstetrics & Gynecology
Known For: Advocacy for maternal and reproductive health in South Sudan.

  • Worked with both local hospitals and NGOs to improve access to care for women, especially in rural areas.
  • Active in campaigns against gender-based violence and early marriage.

4. Dr. Bol Deng Bol

Known For: Contributions in health education and youth empowerment through the INTREPID South Sudan initiative.

5. Dr. Hakim Dario

Specialty: Political and Health Activism
Known For: While also a trained medical doctor, he is better known for his work in advocacy and leadership, particularly with the Kush Democratic Majority Party, and addressing health rights as part of human rights.
