Kamali Thompson, Professional Whose Career Seamlessly Bridges Elite Athletics And Medicine

Kamali Thompson is a distinguished American fencer and medical professional whose career seamlessly bridges elite athletics and medicine.​


Fencing Career

Born on December 11, 1991, in Los Angeles and raised in Teaneck, New Jersey, Kamali began fencing during her freshman year at Teaneck High School. She honed her skills at the Peter Westbrook Foundation, a renowned fencing club in New York City. At Temple University, she became a four-time NCAA qualifier and earned All-American honors in saber fencing. Post-graduation, Kamali clinched the Division 1 Women’s Sabre National Championship in 2016 and represented Team USA internationally, including as an alternate at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. After an 18-year fencing career, she announced her retirement in March 2022. ​


Medical and Academic Achievements

Kamali pursued her passion for medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, graduating in 2021. She is currently an orthopedic surgery resident, integrating her athletic experience into her medical practice. Additionally, she holds an MBA from Rutgers Business School, exemplifying her commitment to multidisciplinary excellence. ​


Advocacy and Inspiration

Through her blog, Saber & A Stethoscope, Kamali shares insights into balancing rigorous medical training with high-level athletic competition. She emphasizes the importance of self-confidence and pursuing diverse passions, stating, “I can take my fencing, my medical career, and my MBA and make it into whatever I want to make it into.” ​
