Egypt has a well-developed network of airports that serve both domestic and international flights. These airports are vital for tourism, business, and cargo, especially considering Egypt’s location as a gateway between Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

Here’s a list of the main airports in Egypt, grouped by international and domestic importance:

1. Major International Airports

These airports handle the majority of international traffic, including tourists and business travelers:

Cairo International Airport (CAI)

  • Location: Cairo (capital)
  • Egypt’s largest and busiest airport
  • Hub for EgyptAir
  • Terminals: T1 (domestic), T2 & T3 (international)

Hurghada International Airport (HRG)

  • Location: Red Sea coast
  • Major hub for tourism, especially beach resorts
  • Serves many European charter flights

Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport (SSH)

  • Location: Sinai Peninsula
  • Key gateway for Sinai tourism, diving resorts
  • Frequent flights from Russia, UK, and Europe

Borg El Arab Airport (HBE)

  • Location: Near Alexandria
  • Serves the northern coast and second-largest city
  • Alternative to the older El Nouzha Airport (now closed)

Luxor International Airport (LXR)

  • Location: Upper Egypt
  • Handles many tourist flights to ancient monuments like the Valley of the Kings
  • Also used for domestic flights

Aswan International Airport (ASW)

  • Location: Southern Egypt
  • Gateway to Nubian culture, Lake Nasser, and Abu Simbel

2. Other International/Domestic Airports

These airports serve both international charters and domestic routes:

  • Marsa Alam International Airport (RMF) – for Red Sea diving resorts
  • Taba International Airport (TCP) – near the Israeli border, Sinai tourism
  • Sohag International Airport (HMB) – serves Upper Egypt, many flights from Gulf countries
  • Assiut Airport (ATZ) – domestic and some regional traffic
  • Abu Simbel Airport (ABS) – mostly chartered flights for tourists visiting Abu Simbel temples

3. Military/Civil Airports

Some airports serve dual purposes:

  • Almaza Air Base (HEAZ) – Cairo, used for VIP and military
  • El Gouna Airport – small private airstrip for resorts
  • El Arish Airport – North Sinai, limited civil use

4. Airport Services

  • Major airports offer services like:
    • Duty-free shops
    • VIP lounges
    • Currency exchange
