Morocco Has a Rich and Diverse Sports Culture, Blending Traditional and Modern Influences

Morocco has a rich and diverse sports culture, blending traditional and modern influences. Here are the main sports practiced in Morocco, from popular to traditional:


1. Football (Soccer)

  • Most popular sport in Morocco by far
  • Played everywhere: streets, schools, beaches, and pro clubs
  • Morocco has historic clubs like Raja Casablanca, Wydad Casablanca, and FAR Rabat
  • National team (“Lions of the Atlas“) made history by reaching the 2022 World Cup semi-finals

2. Equestrian Sports

  • Deeply rooted in Moroccan and Berber culture
  • Fantasia (Tbourida) – traditional horse-riding performance with synchronized rifle shots
  • Modern show jumping and endurance riding also popular

3. Martial Arts

  • Popular styles:
    • Taekwondo
    • Judo
    • Karate
    • Boxing – especially in urban centers
  • Morocco has produced international fighters in kickboxing and MMA (e.g. Badr Hari)

4. Basketball

    • Taghazout, Agadir, Essaouira
