Several Popular American Rappers Have African Roots,Here Are Some Well-known Ones

Several popular American rappers have African roots, either by birth or through their family heritage. Here are some well-known ones:

American Rappers with African Origins

1. Jidenna (Nigeria)

  • Born in the U.S. to a Nigerian father and American mother.
  • Famous for the hit “Classic Man.”
  • Embraces his Igbo heritage in music and fashion.

2. Nipsey Hussle (Eritrea)

  • Father was from Eritrea, while his mother was African American.
  • Visited Eritrea and was proud of his African roots.
  • Known for “Racks in the Middle” and “Victory Lap.”

3. Akon (Senegal)

  • Born in the U.S. to Senegalese parents and spent much of his childhood in Dakar, Senegal.
  • Famous for songs like “Locked Up,” “Smack That,” and “Lonely.”
  • Involved in projects to develop Africa, including Akon City and solar energy projects.

4. Wale (Nigeria)

  • Full name: Olubowale Victor Akintimehin.
  • Parents are from Yoruba, Nigeria.
  • Hit songs include “Lotus Flower Bomb” and “On Chill.”
  • Often references Nigerian culture in his music.

5. French Montana (Morocco)

  • Born Karim Kharbouch in Casablanca, Morocco before moving to the U.S. at 13.
  • Famous for “Unforgettable” and “Pop That.”
  • Proudly represents his North African heritage.

6. 21 Savage (Dominican Republic/Saint Vincent & the Grenadines)

  • Though mainly linked to the Caribbean, he has African roots from his father’s side.
  • Hit songs: “A Lot,” “Bank Account,” and “Rich Flex.”

7. Chika (Nigeria)

  • American rapper of Nigerian descent.
  • Gained fame for her lyrical talent and spoken-word poetry.
  • Nominated for a Grammy.

Many of these artists blend African influences into their music, fashion, and activism.
