In 2019, a team of South Sudanese teenagers developed a robot designed to remove pollutants from water bodies. They showcased their innovation at the FIRST Global Challenge in Dubai, an international robotics competition that year focused on “Ocean Opportunities,” emphasizing the critical issue of ocean pollution.
The team, comprising students from South Sudan, competed against over 1,500 participants from 191 countries. Their robot, named “Ramceil Botics,” was engineered to extract plastic debris and other contaminants from aquatic environments. Despite facing challenges during the competition, such as a chain malfunction, the robot performed commendably.
Team member James Madut highlighted the importance of unity and community involvement in addressing environmental issues, stating, “As youth, our main point is to unite and make a change and work with the community to clean the oceans. We can do it together.” Fellow participant Adau Deng Kuol emphasized that the competition “gave a voice to people who can do something about the problem.”
The FIRST Global Challenge aims to inspire young individuals worldwide to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, addressing pressing global challenges through innovation and collaboration.
This initiative by the South Sudanese team not only showcases their technical skills but also underscores the potential of youth-led solutions in combating global environmental issues.
