Afro-Caribbeans have a variety of values and characteristics, including a strong sense of community, respect for their elders, and a connection to Africa:

  • CommunityAfro-Caribbeans value their community and community centers are important for keeping their culture alive.
  • RespectAfro-Caribbeans value respect and address older people with titles like “Mr.” or “Ms.”. They also expect professionals to be addressed by their titles, like “Nurse Brown”.
  • Connection to AfricaAfro-Caribbeans value their connection to Africa and dream of returning to the continent.
  • Non-entitlementAfro-Caribbeans have an attitude of non-entitlement, which can help them anticipate scarcity rather than expect excess.

Some prominent Afro-Caribbean people include:

  • Joseph Marcell: Saint Lucian actor known for his role in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
