Train System in Martinique

Martinique does not have a modern train system for public transportation.

No Operational Railways

  • No passenger trains or commuter rail networks exist.
  • There are no metro or tram systems.
  • All public transport is handled by road (buses, taxis, cars) and ferry boats.

Historical Note

  • In the past, narrow-gauge railways existed to serve sugar plantations, transporting sugarcane to factories and ports.
  • These rail lines were:
    • Industrial (not for passengers)
    • Phased out in the 20th century as road transport became dominant

Tourist Train (Heritage)

  • There have been tourist train proposals or seasonal scenic rides, like:
    • Le Train des Plantations (Plantation Train): Sometimes operated on small tracks at old sugar estates
    • Mainly for educational or heritage tourism, not mass transport
