Dr. Ibironke Odumosu-Ayanu, a Nigerian-born legal scholar, has been appointed Dean of the University of Saskatchewan College of Law in Canada.

Key details:- Starts: October 1, 2026- Term: 5 years – She replaces: Martin Phillipson who completed two 5-year terms- Current role*: Professor + Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at the same university since 2008

HER BACKGROUND

1. Education: LLB from University of Lagos → LLM from University of Calgary → PhD from University of British Columbia

2. Expertise: Internationally recognized for research in Business and Human Rights

3. Teaching: Known for mentorship + supervising graduate students. Awards include: – Provost’s College Award for Outstanding Teaching, 2012 – USask InterD Advisor Award, 2026

4. Community: Serves on boards including Saskatchewan Intercultural Association

WHAT THEY SAID

Patti McDougall, Interim Provost, said her appointment reflects “academic excellence, collaborative leadership, and dedication to advancing research and graduate education.” She’s also expected to strengthen the college’s work in Indigenous legal scholarship and community engagement.

She joins the growing list of Nigerian academics taking senior leadership roles in Canadian universities.
