The Listening Governor — Okpebholo’s Engagement with Youths, Civil Society, and Traditional Institutions

Senator Monday Okpebholo is quickly earning a reputation as a listening and responsive governor, whose leadership style is grounded in humility, dialogue, and respect for all segments of society. From youths to civil society groups and traditional rulers, his administration is fostering inclusive governance by building trust and embracing collaboration.

At the heart of this approach is his belief that leadership must reflect the voices of the people. Governor Okpebholo’s town hall meetings, interactive forums, and grassroots engagements are not ceremonial; they are part of a deliberate effort to understand community needs and co-create solutions. These interactions have helped shape policies on security, infrastructure, and social services.

His administration has made youth engagement a top priority. By providing platforms for young people to contribute to governance, he is not only addressing youth restiveness but also nurturing the next generation of leaders. Young professionals are being appointed into strategic roles, and youth-oriented programmes in entrepreneurship and education are gaining momentum.

Governor Okpebholo also recognises the enduring influence of traditional institutions. He maintains regular dialogue with Obas, Enogies, and chiefs across the state, tapping into their grassroots networks to maintain peace, resolve conflicts, and implement policies effectively. These relationships have been instrumental in improving security and strengthening community participation.

Civil society organisations (CSOs) are not left out. Unlike administrations that sideline advocacy groups, the Okpebholo-led government sees them as partners in accountability and development. By welcoming input from NGOs and watchdog groups, his administration reinforces transparency and civic trust.

In a political climate often characterised by detachment and elitism, Senator Okpebholo stands out for his inclusive, people-facing leadership. As Edo State moves forward, his openness to dialogue and collaboration may well become the template for democratic leadership in Nigeria.
