Nigerian students named Africa’s best for drone innovation

A team of Nigerian students has emerged Africa’s top young entrepreneurs after their company, Smartgenix Aeromonitor Limited, representing Darul Noor by Intercontinental Schools, was named the 2025 Africa Company of the Year at the Junior Achievement Africa Company of the Year Competition.The achievement was confirmed by the Marketing and Communications Manager at Junior Achievement Nigeria, Tobiloba Olaosun.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Junior Achievement Nigeria, Dave Uduanu, praised the young innovators, saying, “Smartgenix Aeromonitor Ltd symbolises the incredible talent and leadership that Nigerian youth possess.“Their success serves as a powerful reminder that with the right mentorship and opportunities, young innovators can truly lead on the global stage.

In addition to the main title, the team also clinched the public choice award, receiving enthusiastic support from voters both locally and internationally, highlighting the wide impact of their innovation.The accolade comes with a cash prize of $3,000 and qualifies the team to advance to the De La Vega Global Entrepreneurship Award, a global competition featuring first-place winners from Junior Achievement’s six regional competitions.The global award offers a grand prize of $15,000, along with international recognition and educational opportunities.

This year’s competition focused on the theme “ACT: Action for Climate Transformation”, prompting participants to develop sustainable solutions to environmental, social, and economic challenges.The statement further read, “Smartgenix Aeromonitor Ltd impressed judges with drone technology designed for precision agriculture, which aims to minimise costs, save time, reduce labour, and promote sustainable farming practices.“

The winning team is composed of secondary school students Ruqaiya Abdulfatai Alubankudi, Khadija Muhammad Musa, Rukaiya Makki Abubakar, and Zainab Idris Gaya, showcasing the potential of youth-led innovation in addressing global issues.”Junior Achievement Nigeria continues to empower young people aged five to 35 through initiatives such as the Company Programme and SET4LYF, offering skills in financial literacy, work readiness, entrepreneurship, and digital literacy.

The triumph of Smartgenix Aeromonitor Ltd highlights the growing role of Nigerian youth in innovation, sustainability, and entrepreneurship, signalling a bright future for Africa’s next generation of leaders.
