Grassroots: SMEDAN and ALGON Team Up to Power Nigeria’s 774 Local Economies

Nigeria’s small businesses just got a major boost at the grassroots level. The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has signed a landmark partnership with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to take enterprise support directly to the streets, markets, and communities where real hustle happens — across all 774 Local Government Areas.

The deal, signed in Abuja by SMEDAN DG Mr. Charles Odii and ALGON National President Hon. (Engr.) Bello Lawal, is designed to break the big-city barrier that has kept many rural and community-based entrepreneurs from accessing federal support. What This Means for Local Entrepreneurs Instead of waiting for opportunities to trickle down from Abuja or Lagos, local governments will now actively identify entrepreneurs in their communities and link them directly to:- Business financing and grants- Government intervention programmes-

Skills training and business development support- Market access and digital toolsA major pillar of the partnership is scaling SMEDAN’s flagship One Local Government One Product (OLOP)programme — an initiative that helps each LGA identify, develop and promote one competitive product its community can be known for.Speaking at the signing, SMEDAN DG Charles Odii said:> “The businesses that drive Nigeria’s economy are not concentrated in our major cities alone. They are in our communities, markets and neighbourhoods across the country. Working with ALGON gives us a stronger structure for reaching those businesses and ensuring that the opportunities available through SMEDAN get to the people who need them.”He added that the collaboration will help SMEDAN tailor interventions to local realities, understanding what each community does best — whether it’s agro-processing, fashion, crafts, or tech services.

For ALGON President Bello Lawal, the partnership is a natural fit. Local governments, he said, are closest to the people and best placed to mobilise entrepreneurs who have long been invisible to national programmes. The alliance will also drive enterprise formalisation, skills development, business advisory, value-chain development and local production — building a stronger database of MSMEs for more targeted support in the future. For Nigeria’s grassroots entrepreneurs — the market woman, the young shoemaker, the agro-processor — this could be the bridge that finally connects community hustle to national opportunity.
