Ethiopia has one of the oldest and most fascinating monarchies in the world, with a legacy that stretches back thousands of years—often linked to the biblical Queen of Sheba and King Solomon. Here’s a breakdown of the most important monarchs of Ethiopia, especially from the Solomonic Dynasty:


Famous Ethiopian Monarchs

1. Menelik I (Legendary Founder)

  • Reign: Traditionally dated ~10th century BCE
  • Claim to Fame:
    • Said to be the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba (Makeda).
    • Considered the first Emperor of Ethiopia and the founder of the Solomonic Dynasty.
    • Believed (in Ethiopian tradition) to have brought the Ark of the Covenant to Ethiopia.

2. Emperor Menelik II

  • Reign: 1889–1913
  • Legacy:
    • Unified modern Ethiopia.
    • Famous for the Battle of Adwa (1896), where Ethiopia defeated Italian forces—one of the first major African victories against European colonial powers.
    • Founded Addis Ababa as the capital.

3. Emperor Haile Selassie I

  • Reign: 1930–1974
  • Global Influence:
    • Modernized Ethiopia and was a founding figure of the African Union.
    • Resisted Italian invasion (1935) and regained independence with Allied help.
    • Regarded as a messianic figure in Rastafarianism, known as “The Lion of Judah.”
  • Deposed: In a coup by the Marxist Derg regime in 1974.

4. Emperor Tewodros II

  • Reign: 1855–1868
  • Known For:
    • Tried to centralize power and modernize the country.
    • Committed suicide during the British expedition to Ethiopia after refusing to surrender.
    • Considered a nationalist hero.

5. Emperor Yohannes IV

  • Reign: 1872–1889
  • Details:
    • Ruled during a time of internal strife and foreign threats.
    • Died in battle against Sudanese Mahdists.

The Solomonic Dynasty

  • Ruled Ethiopia intermittently from 1270 to 1974.
