Alena Analeigh McQuarter (née Wicker), born on November 19, 2008, in Fontana, California, is an American prodigy recognized for her exceptional achievements in science and education. She gained national attention by becoming the youngest African American to be accepted into medical school in the United States. ​

Early Life and Education

Alena’s academic journey is marked by remarkable milestones. She graduated from high school at the age of 12 and subsequently enrolled at both Arizona State University and Oakwood University, pursuing degrees in biological sciences. Initially interested in engineering, Alena’s focus shifted to viral immunology after a transformative trip to Jordan, leading her to aspire to become a medical doctor. ​

Acceptance into Medical School

In 2022, at just 13 years old, Alena was accepted into the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Heersink School of Medicine through the Burroughs Wellcome Scholars Early Assurance Program. This achievement made her the youngest Black person to be accepted into medical school in the U.S. ​

Founder of The Brown STEM Girl

Beyond her academic pursuits, Alena is the founder of The Brown STEM Girl, an organization dedicated to empowering girls of color to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The organization offers scholarships, mentorships, and internships, aiming to address racial and gender disparities in STEM fields. ​

Alena’s accomplishments have earned her significant recognition, including:​

  • Nomination for Forbes 30 Under 30.​
  • Finalist for TIME and Nickelodeon’s Kid of the Year.​
  • Recipient of the Global Child Prodigy Award in Science.​

Personal Life

Alena was raised by her mother, Daphne McQuarter, and has two sisters. Despite her accelerated academic path, she engages in activities typical for her age, such as spending time with friends and playing soccer, maintaining a balanced lifestyle. ​
