Here is a complete list of Haiti’s presidents from independence in 1804 to the present:


1804–1915: Early Republic & Political Instability

  1. Jean-Jacques Dessalines (1804–1806) – First ruler, later declared himself emperor, assassinated.
  2. Henri Christophe (1806–1820) – First as president of the northern state, then king; died by suicide.
  3. Alexandre Pétion (1806–1818) – Ruled the south; introduced land reforms.
  4. Jean-Pierre Boyer (1818–1843) – Unified Haiti, ruled for over two decades, exiled.
  5. Charles Rivière-Hérard (1843–1844) – Overthrown.
  6. Philippe Guerrier (1844–1845)
  7. Jean-Louis Pierrot (1845–1846)
  8. Jean-Baptiste Riché (1846–1847)
  9. Faustin Soulouque (1847–1859) – Declared himself emperor as Faustin I; exiled.
  10. Fabre Geffrard (1859–1867)
  11. Sylvain Salnave (1867–1869) – Overthrown, executed.
  12. Jean-Nicolas Nissage Saget (1869–1874)
  13. Michel Domingue (1874–1876)
  14. Pierre Théoma Boisrond-Canal (1876–1879)
  15. Lysius Salomon (1879–1888)
  16. François Denys Légitime (1888–1889)
  17. Florvil Hyppolite (1889–1896)
  18. Tiresias Simon Sam (1896–1902)
  19. Pierre Nord Alexis (1902–1908)
  20. François C. Antoine Simon (1908–1911)
  21. Cincinnatus Leconte (1911–1912) – Died in explosion.
  22. Tancrède Auguste (1912–1913)
  23. Michel Oreste (1913–1914)
  24. Oreste Zamor (1914)
  25. Joseph Davilmar Théodore (1914–1915)
  26. Vilbrun Guillaume Sam (1915) – Assassinated.

1915–1957: U.S. Occupation & Transitional Governments

  1. Philippe Sudré Dartiguenave (1915–1922) – Under U.S. occupation.
  2. Louis Borno (1922–1930) – U.S. occupation continued.
  3. Eugène Roy (1930) – Provisional president.
  4. Sténio Vincent (1930–1941) – Ended U.S. occupation.
  5. Élie Lescot (1941–1946) – Overthrown.
  6. Franck Lavaud (1946) – Military junta leader.
  7. Dumarsais Estimé (1946–1950) – First black president since 1915.
  8. Paul Magloire (1950–1956) – Overthrown.
  9. Joseph Nemours Pierre-Louis (1956–1957) – Provisional.
  10. Franck Sylvain (1957) – Provisional.
  11. Léon Cantave (1957) – Provisional.
  12. Daniel Fignolé (1957) – Brief rule, overthrown.

1957–1986: Duvalier Dictatorship

  1. François “Papa Doc” Duvalier (1957–1971) – Ruled with an iron fist, established a dictatorship.
  2. Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier (1971–1986) – Continued dictatorship, overthrown.

1986–Present: Post-Duvalier Era & Democratic Struggles

  1. Henri Namphy (1986–1988) – Military rule.
  2. Leslie Manigat (1988) – Overthrown in a coup.
  3. Henri Namphy (1988) – Brief return, overthrown.
  4. Prosper Avril (1988–1990) – Military rule.
  5. Ertha Pascal-Trouillot (1990–1991) – First female president, transitional.
  6. Jean-Bertrand Aristide (1991) – First elected president, overthrown.
  7. Raoul Cédras (1991–1994) – Military leader, controlled Haiti.
  8. Émile Jonassaint (1994) – Provisional.
  9. Jean-Bertrand Aristide (1994–1996) – Restored to power.
