Theresa Kachindamoto is a remarkable traditional leader from Malawi, widely respected for her bold activism against child marriage and her advocacy for girls’ education.

Theresa Kachindamoto

Title: Senior Chief of the Dedza District, Malawi
Known As: “The Terminator of Child Marriages”

Early Life & Background

  • Born into a family of chiefs in Dedza District, Central Malawi.
  • Worked as a secretary at a college for over 25 years before becoming a traditional leader.
  • Unexpectedly chosen as Senior Chief (the highest traditional authority in her district), giving her influence over nearly 900,000 people.

Fight Against Child Marriage

  • Malawi has long struggled with high rates of child marriage due to poverty and tradition.
  • After becoming chief, Theresa Kachindamoto made it her mission to end child marriages in her region.

Her Actions:

  • Annulled over 3,000 child marriages (some reports say 4,000+) by using her authority.
  • Reinstated the girls into school, often paying school fees herself if parents could not.
  • Enforced local bylaws banning early marriage and punishing chiefs who allowed them.
  • Advocated for the 2015 amendment to Malawi’s constitution that raised the minimum marriage age to 18.

Advocacy & Recognition

  • Works closely with NGOs, schools, and government leaders to push for education and women’s rights.
  • Has become an international symbol of grassroots activism, often invited to speak at global forums on women’s rights.
  • Recognized by UN Women, BBC 100 Women, and many international organizations.

Impact

  • Thousands of girls in Malawi who might have been forced into early marriage are now in classrooms instead, thanks to her.
  • She’s shown how traditional leadership can be used as a force for progress, blending cultural respect with human rights advocacy.
  • Nicknamed “The Fearless Chief” because she doesn’t hesitate to remove subordinate chiefs from power if they promote harmful practices.
