Egypt’s sea ports are essential to its economy, serving as gateways for international trade, tourism, and transport. Given its strategic location on the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, Egypt controls one of the world’s most important maritime routes — especially through the Suez Canal.

Here’s a breakdown of the main sea ports in Egypt:

1. Major Mediterranean Sea Ports

Port of Alexandria

  • Location: Northern Egypt (Mediterranean)
  • Egypt’s main commercial port
  • Handles 40-50% of the country’s imports/exports
  • Also has a passenger terminal for cruise ships

Port of El Dekheila

  • Adjacent to Alexandria Port
  • Deepwater port for containers and bulk cargo
  • Major role in steel and grain imports

Port of Damietta

  • Modern and highly automated
  • Located east of the Nile Delta
  • Important for container shipping, grain, and timber

Port Said Port

  • Northern entrance to the Suez Canal
  • Key for transshipment and container cargo
  • Nearby East Port Said Port is expanding with free zones and logistics hubs

2. Red Sea Ports

Suez Port (Adabiya & Ain Sokhna)

  • Located at the southern entrance of the Suez Canal
  • Adabiya Port: General cargo and oil products
  • Ain Sokhna Port: One of the most modern container ports; hub for industrial logistics and trade with Asia

Safaga Port

  • Used for phosphate exports, minerals, and passenger ferries to Saudi Arabia
  • Also supports Hajj/Umrah pilgrims

Hurghada Port

  • Mainly serves passenger ferries and tourist boats
  • Supports tourism to the Red Sea resorts

Sharm El Sheikh Port

  • Mainly for tourism, cruises, and some cargo
  • Located at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula

3. Specialized Ports

Abu Qir Port

  • Near Alexandria
  • Used for military and industrial shipments

Al-Arish Port

  • On the northeast Mediterranean coast
  • Small port used for exports to the Levant (Lebanon, Palestine, etc.)

Quseir Port

  • On the Red Sea
  • Historically used for phosphate shipping

4. The Suez Canal

  • While not a port itself, the Suez Canal is a vital international waterway.
  • Links the Mediterranean and Red Sea.
  • Around 12% of global trade passes through it.
  • Managed by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA).

5. Free Zones & Development

  • Egypt is developing logistics and industrial zones around ports:
    • East Port Said (Suez Canal Economic Zone)
    • Ain Sokhna (Industrial hub)
    • Damietta Port Logistics Zone
