Captain Remoshay Nelson is a distinguished officer in the United States Air Force, renowned for breaking barriers as the first Black woman to join the elite Thunderbirds demonstration team. A native of Douglasville, Georgia, Nelson’s journey is marked by dedication and trailblazing achievements.

Early Life and Education

Growing up in Douglasville, Nelson was inspired by her stepfather’s military stories, which sparked her adventurous spirit. She pursued higher education at Howard University, a historically Black university in Washington, D.C., where she majored in Speech Communications and participated in the Air Force ROTC program. Her time at Howard instilled in her a strong sense of identity and purpose.

Military Career and Achievements

Commissioned as an officer, Nelson has served in various public affairs roles, including leadership positions in Turkey, Botswana, and Europe. In 2020, she made history by becoming the first Black woman to join the Thunderbirds, the Air Force’s premier aerial demonstration team. In this role, she serves as the team’s public affairs officer, showcasing her expertise in communications and public relations.

Advocacy and Representation

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Nelson is committed to inspiring future generations. She views her role as a visible leader as an opportunity to show young girls, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, that they can achieve their dreams. Her mantra, “I won’t be the last,” reflects her hope to pave the way for others to follow in her footsteps.
