Peter Tabichi, a Kenyan science teacher and Franciscan brother, gained international recognition in 2019 when he was awarded the prestigious Global Teacher Prize. This annual $1 million award, presented by the Varkey Foundation, honors exceptional educators who have made outstanding contributions to their profession.

Background and Teaching Philosophy

Teaching at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani Village, located in Kenya’s Rift Valley, Tabichi faced numerous challenges, including limited resources and a high student-to-teacher ratio. Despite these obstacles, he remained dedicated to his students’ success, personally donating 80% of his salary to support underprivileged pupils.

Achievements and Impact

Under Tabichi’s mentorship, his students have excelled in national and international science competitions. Notably, a group of his students won the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Best Chemistry Project award for developing a device that allows blind and deaf individuals to measure objects.

Recent Developments

In 2022, Kenyan President William Ruto appointed Tabichi to the government’s education task force, recognizing his commitment to educational reform and excellence.

Peter Tabichi’s dedication and innovative teaching methods continue to inspire educators and students worldwide, highlighting the profound impact of committed teachers in transforming lives and communities.
