Professor Moshood Abiola Peller (1941 – August 2, 1997) was a renowned Nigerian magician celebrated for his captivating performances that mesmerized audiences across Africa. Born Folorunsho Abiola in Iseyin, Oyo State, Nigeria, he developed an early interest in magic and illusion.

Early Life and Education

Peller attended Moslem School and Native Authority Primary School in Iseyin. His passion for magic led him to perform illusion tricks as early as 1954, traveling to cities like Ibadan, Lagos, and Oyo to showcase his talent. In 1964, he pursued formal training at a School of Magical Arts in India, dedicating 18 months to honing his craft. Upon completing his studies, he briefly settled in Liberia before returning to Nigeria.

Career Highlights

Peller’s first major performance after his training took place in 1966 at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos. His shows were renowned for their complexity and entertainment value, often featuring his wife, who participated as his assistant in various acts. One of his most famous illusions involved “sawing” his wife in half, a performance that left audiences spellbound.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Professor Peller’s fame soared, and he became a household name in Nigeria and beyond. He performed before numerous dignitaries, including African leaders such as Chief Obafemi Awolowo, President Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo, President Samuel Doe of Liberia, and President Mathieu Kérékou of Benin Republic.

Personal Life

Professor Peller was married and often collaborated with his wife during his performances. He was the father of Shina Peller, a notable Nigerian entrepreneur and politician.

Tragic Demise

On August 2, 1997, Professor Peller was tragically assassinated at his residence in Onipanu, Lagos State. His death shocked the nation, and the circumstances surrounding his assassination remain a subject of speculation and mystery.

Legacy

Professor Peller’s contributions to the art of magic and entertainment in Nigeria are unparalleled. He is remembered as a trailblazer who brought magic to the forefront of Nigerian entertainment, inspiring future generations of performers. His life and career continue to be celebrated, and his legacy endures in the annals of African entertainment history.
