Professor Samuel Achilefu is a Nigerian-born scientist renowned for his pioneering work in medical imaging and cancer treatment. He currently serves as the Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, holding the Lyda Hill Distinguished University Chair in Biomedical Engineering. Additionally, he is a Professor of Radiology and a member of the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Early Life and Education

Born in Nigeria, Achilefu pursued higher education in France, earning his Ph.D. from the University of Nancy as a French Government Scholar. He then completed postdoctoral training at Oxford University in England.

Professional Career

In 1993, Achilefu was recruited from Oxford to St. Louis to work for Mallinckrodt Medical. By 2001, he joined the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine, where he established the Optical Radiology Laboratory. His innovative work led to the development of the “CancerVision Goggle,” a wearable device that enables surgeons to visualize cancer cells in real-time during operations, enhancing the precision of tumor removal.

Research and Innovations

Achilefu’s expertise lies in the molecular imaging of human diseases, utilizing multimodal imaging methods to address complex medical challenges. His research has significantly advanced the field of cancer imaging and therapy, leading to over 59 issued U.S. patents and more than 300 scientific publications.

Honors and Awards

Throughout his career, Achilefu has received numerous accolades, including:

  • Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award (2019): Recognizing his significant contributions to the field of biomedical optics.
  • Distinguished Investigator Award (2018): Presented by the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research.
  • St. Louis Award (2014): Honoring his outstanding scientific achievements and contributions to the community.

Achilefu is also a member of the National Academy of Medicine and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, reflecting his esteemed position in the scientific community.
