Oyo unveils weeklong programme for 50th anniversary

The Oyo State Government has unveiled a week-long programme of events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the state’s creation.The lineup of activities includes religious services, cultural exhibitions, an award and dinner night, and a public lecture titled, “Consolidating The Legacy, Navigating The Present And Reimagining The Future.”Chairman, Oyo @ 50 Anniversary Committee, Saheed Fijabi, made this known while addressing journalists in Ibadan, on Wednesday. Governor Seyi Makinde had, on October 6, appointed Fijabi, a former member of the House of Representatives, as the Chairman of the 11-man committee of the State at the 50th Anniversary.

Oyo State was created on February 3, 1976, by the military government of the late Gen Murtala Mohammed.David Jemibewon was the first military governor of the state between 1976 and 1978.

Speaking on Wednesday, Fijabi said the state was celebrating its identity, resilience, and shared aspirations

He said the festivities would begin on January 26, with Makinde’s address at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.He added that a dinner would also be held on February 3 to honour distinguished citizens and contributors to the state’s development.“Other activities include Health Outreach in the 33 Local Government Areas of the state, Film Show in the six geo-political zones, Carnival, Symposium and Lectures, Religious services, Sports, and empowerment programme for women,” he said.“The Golden Jubilee programme is structured to combine reflection, thanksgiving, intellectual engagement and cultural celebration, in line with the future-driven vision of Governor Seyi Makinde.”
