Nija Butler is a remarkable mother from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, whose story of love, resilience, and determination has inspired many.
A Lifelong Bond
Nija became a mother to her daughter, Ambrealle Butler, while still in high school. Their close relationship resembled that of siblings, with Nija describing Ambrealle as her best friend and confidante.
A Life-Saving Gift
In Ambrealle’s late 20s, she was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a rare kidney disease that can lead to kidney failure. She endured five years of dialysis, spending up to 13 hours a day connected to a machine. Determined to help, Nija secretly underwent testing and discovered she was a perfect match for a kidney donation. The successful transplant not only saved Ambrealle’s life but also deepened their unbreakable bond. Ambrealle poignantly stated, “She gave birth to me, and she gave me a second chance at life. She gave me life twice.”
Achieving Dreams Together
Motivated by their experiences, both Nija and Ambrealle pursued nursing careers. They enrolled in a 16-month registered nurse program at Baton Rouge General School of Nursing. Facing rigorous coursework and clinicals together, they graduated side by side in April 2025, ready to embark on their new journey in healthcare. Lipstick
