  • Tunisia was previously a monarchy under the Husainid Dynasty, which ruled from 1705 to 1957.
  • The last Bey (monarch) was Muhammad VIII al-Amin.
  • On July 25, 1957, the monarchy was abolished, and Tunisia became a republic with Habib Bourguiba as its first president.
