In a powerful crossover no one saw coming, America’s biggest streamer IShowSpeed has joined forces with Barack Obama and Michelle Obama to bring Ghana’s hidden history to the world.Speed is now an official producer on THE EYES OF GHANA, the highly-anticipated documentary produced by the Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions and Breakwater Studios.

The Story:The film centers on 93-year-old Rev. Dr. Chris Hesse, the legendary Ghanaian filmmaker who served as Kwame Nkrumah’s personal cameraman. He captured Ghana’s independence and Africa’s liberation movements in the 1950s and 60s.When Nkrumah was overthrown, the military ordered the footage destroyed. Hesse risked his life to save over 1,000 reels, hiding them for decades. Now almost blind, he is on a final mission to restore them and screen them in Accra for the first time. Why Speed?

The 21-year-old streamer, real name Darren Watkins Jr., fell in love with Ghana during his Africa tour earlier this year after discovering his Ghanaian ancestry.”His camera captured the birth of African independence,” Speed said. “I’m humbled by his legacy and proud to help bring his story to my community.”Directed by 2-time Academy Award winner Ben Proudfoot, the film premiered at TIFF 2025 and will get a special one-night cinema release on October 28, 2026 in the US and Canada (AMC, Regal, Cinemark). Ghana premiere date TBA.
