In Nigerian politics, few careers capture the complexity of geography, identity, and ambition like that of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, widely known as “Yayi.” Born in Lagos but rooted in Ogun, his path cuts across two of the South West’s most strategic states — and now points toward the Ogun State Government House.

*1. Lagos Roots: Accountant to Lawmaker, 2003–2011*Yayi was born on 10 August 1969 in Lagos Island. A chartered accountant by training and member of the Association of Accounting Technicians, he first tested politics in Lagos. From 2003 to 2011 he served in the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Alimosho State Constituency. There he was instrumental in the law establishing the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service and the Public Procurement Act — early signs of his fiscal-policy leaning.
*2. Federal House: Public Accounts Watchdog, 2011–2015*In 2011 he moved to Abuja as Member of the House of Representatives for Alimosho Federal Constituency. As Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts from 2011 to 2015, Yayi became one of the National Assembly’s most visible fiscal hawks, interrogating MDAs on audit queries. He also sat on Committees on Aids, Loans & Debt Management, Emergency & Disaster Preparedness, Land Transport and Petroleum Resources.
*3. Lagos West Senator: Consolidation, 2015–2023*Yayi was elected Senator for Lagos West in 2015 and re-elected in 2019, serving until 11 June 2023. He served as Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Communications 2015-2019. His Lagos West tenure was defined by infrastructure bills, including the bill for a Federal University of Technology in Ilaro, and a reputation for constituency projects branded “Yayi”. By 2022, “Yayi Everywhere You Go” had become a political slogan across Lagos and Ogun.
*4. The Ogun Homecoming: Senator for Ogun West, 2023–Present*Though he built his career in Lagos, Yayi is Yewa-Awori by ancestry. In 2022 he made the rare cross-state move to contest Ogun West. He won and assumed office as Senator for Ogun West on 13 June 2023, succeeding Tolu Odebiyi. On 8 August 2023 he was named *Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriations* — one of the 10th Senate’s most influential roles.Since returning “home,” his record has been aggressively project-focused. Reports cite
*over 100 roads and bridges, 150 classrooms, ICT centres, health facilities, vocational training for thousands*, and the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro to a University of Technology. His legislative push includes bills for a Federal College of Geological and Cement Studies in Iselu and Agricultural Processing Zones.
*5. The 2027 Governorship Question*Yayi’s Ogun West move was never just about the Senate. For decades, Ogun West has never produced a governor — a point stressed by the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who said: “It is the turn of the Yewa-Awori people to produce a governor for Ogun State”.As he approached his 56th birthday in August 2025, commentary described “the air in Ogun State” as “thick with anticipation — not merely of celebration, but of coronation”. His brand is now tied to that Ogun West agitation, with projects deliberately reimagining “marginalisation into momentum”.*The Yayi Brand*From Lagos State House of Assembly to Chairman of Senate Appropriations, Yayi’s journey is a study in “grit, grace, and governance”. He blends accountant’s discipline with populist visibility, and has now staked his legacy on whether Ogun West finally breaks its governorship jinx.As one analysis put it: his record is “not rhetorical — it is empirical”. The next chapter of that record will be written in 2027.
