Dr. Robert “Bob” Shurney was a NASA engineer known for his contributions to the Apollo space program. He played a key role in designing the lightweight aluminum wheels used on the Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), which helped astronauts navigate the Moon’s surface.

Shurney was a physicist and one of the few African American engineers at NASA during the 1960s and 1970s. He also worked on food packaging and waste disposal systems for space missions. His innovations contributed to the success of multiple Apollo missions, and he remained involved in NASA projects for years.
