Nigeria’s Trade Associations Chart a Bold Path Forward Lagos, Nigeria — November 12, 2025 The 7th edition of the Conference of Nigeria Trade Associations (CONiTA 2025) was held today at the LCCI Conference & Exhibition Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, under the theme: “A Nation without Trade Association Industry.” The event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and association executives from across Nigeria to explore the future of trade associations as engines of inclusive growth and national development.

The keynote address was delivered by Alexander, a respected thought leader and advocate for sustainable development, who emphasized the critical role of trade associations in shaping Nigeria’s economic destiny.“When associations thrive, industries flourish. When industries flourish, nations prosper. And when we lead with our values — empathy, respect, and dignity — we lead with purpose,” Alexander declared to a packed hall.He acknowledged Dr. Nelson I. Obine, FCSI, FITAM, FIMC, CMC, President of the Institute of Trade Association Management (ITAM), for his steadfast leadership and personal commitment to the conference’s success.

Despite scheduling challenges, Alexander noted that he could never disappoint Dr. Obine, whose vision continues to elevate the trade association movement in Nigeria. On Global Lessons: Alexander contrasted North Korea’s ban on trade associations — which led to industrial stagnation — with Germany’s thriving association ecosystem that contributes over 20% to its GDP.On CONiTA’s Legacy: The conference has trained hundreds of association leaders, unified voices across sectors, and empowered informal entrepreneurs.- SDG 2030 & Agenda 2063: Nigeria’s progress on poverty and healthcare was acknowledged, but urgent action is needed on education, inequality, and climate resilience.

With Nigeria’s population projected to exceed 400 million by 2070, Alexander warned: “It’s swim or drown.”On Leadership Principles: He outlined seven pillars for resilient associations, including governance, collaboration, digital transformation, and cultural integrity — rooted in African values like Ubuntu, respect for elders, and community solidarity.Participants praised the keynote for its clarity, urgency, and cultural resonance. “Alexander reminded us that development is not just about GDP — it’s about dignity,” said one delegate.

CONiTA 2025 reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s trade associations as strategic partners in national development. The Institute of Trade Association Management will continue its leadership training, policy advocacy, and grassroots engagement in alignment with SDG 2030 and Africa Agenda 2063.
