Today we are celebrating a young man whose story is a reminder that where you start doesn’t have to be where you finish. Jiire Smith shared a powerful reflection on dreaming from a small place, and I had to share it with you all.
His Story in His Words:
“I remember being 14, walking under the hot sun in Gidan Mangoro, outskirts of Abuja, to buy bread from our junction. I’d be walking, singing, and daydreaming of being an artist performing all over the world.
I was sufficiently talented, and I definitely was driven, but to be honest… it just felt so out of probability… how? I’m just some boy in this remote village that has a nice voice. But God had a plan.
I snuck my way into one of the most sought after and expensive secondary schools in Nigeria through a scholarship, and then snuck into a 2% acceptance rate university in Abu Dhabi with another scholarship. It was always an eye of the needle type of situation. The odds were always against me… but when did odds matter?
As I grew in confidence, learned to trust and rely on God who directs my life, not for my glorification, but because each of our lives serves as a mirror through which those around us can see differently, have their perspectives shifted and their lives lifted.”
From Gidan Mangoro to Abu Dhabi — Jiire’s journey is proof that talent plus grace can break any statistic. The odds may be against you, but purpose will always make a way.
