Tony Akiotu, the former Group Managing Director of Daar Communications, has been elected as the new chairman of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), securing a resounding victory over Chief Raymond Dokpesi Jr. at the biennial election in Abuja on Wednesday, 8 April 2026. Akiotu received an impressive 62 votes, while Dokpesi Jr. garnered just 9

During their acceptance speech, Akiotu—a Lagos Baptist Academy alumnus—expressed heartfelt thanks to members for their strong support, interpreting the outcome as a clear mandate to advance Nigeria’s broadcasting landscape. They pledged to guide BON with integrity, transparency, and a renewed emphasis on innovation.

Akiotu also stressed the importance of unity within BON, stating that effective collaboration among media organisations is vital for addressing the industry’s ongoing challenges. Additionally, they highlighted the critical need for strict compliance with regulatory standards, emphasising that upholding a trustworthy and responsible media sector demands collective vigilance and unwavering integrity.
