Major Forests in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG)

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is home to lush, tropical forests, especially on the main island of Saint Vincent. These forests are rich in biodiversity, including endemic species like the St. Vincent parrot.


1. La Soufrière Forest Reserve

  • Location: Northern region of Saint Vincent, surrounding the La Soufrière volcano
  • Type: Montane rainforest
  • Features:
    • Dense, misty forests
    • Volcanic soil, fertile and wet
    • Hiking trails leading to the La Soufrière crater
  • Wildlife: St. Vincent parrot, whistling warbler, tree frogs, snakes
  • Importance: One of SVG’s most protected natural areas

2. Vermont Nature Trail / Forest Reserve

  • Location: Southwestern Saint Vincent, near the Mesopotamia Valley

  • Birdwatching hotspot: Home to the St. Vincent parrot and over 35 bird species

3. Cumberland Forest

  • Location: Central-western Saint Vincent

    • Thick vegetation and river valleys
    • Rich in biodiversity
    • Nearby Cumberland Nature Trail
  • Used for eco-tourism and education

4. Forested Grenadine Islands

While smaller and more arid, some Grenadine islands also support forested zones:

Bequia:

  • Mount Pleasant Hill has dry tropical woodland

Canouan & Union Island:

  • Have scrubby forest and coastal woodlands

Mustique:

  • Privately managed landscapes with native and exotic tree species

Forest Conservation

  • Protected by the Forestry Department
  • Managed as part of SVG’s National Parks and Protected Areas System
  • Focus on preserving biodiversity, water sources, and soil protection
